From the first time I drove a Defender to the day I finally worked up the courage and found the right one. Our Defender is white with a black roof, and we named it Walter, after Walter Mitty, the dreamy movie hero.

And after nearly 50,000 km in our own Defender (it now has 156,000 km on it), I can assure you: “Forget everything you’ve been told about driving a Defender.” In the end, it’s actually even better. Anyone who approaches this car with an open mind will enjoy every meter of the ride. Because it’s more unhurried, more mindful, more hard-won, and more endearing than driving a modern SUV.
