First misunderstood, then forgotten, and now revered.

The Citroën SM’s history was anything but straightforward. Because its creators packed the company’s flagship model with many innovations, high expectations, and an unclear market positioning beneath its futuristic bodywork, the revolution never materialized. The oil crisis and a more-than-ambitious list price did the rest, and the Citroën SM was discontinued after 5 years and just under 13,000 units produced.

Today, the Citroën SM turns heads wherever it goes. Just recently, our car brought traffic to a standstill at a “ Porsche Zentrum ,” prompting employees and customers alike to stop and admire it and talk shop.

Anyone who’s never had the pleasure of driving a Citroën SM should add another item to their automotive bucket list. Because in 2025, it won’t matter at all whether Citroën originally envisioned it as a Gran Turismo, a sports car, or a two-door sedan. This French car, nearly five meters long, is just as inviting for a speedy road trip as it is for a drive to the mountains or a trip to the café on the town square. Its unique features—which were misunderstood at the time—are what set the SM apart from its competitors in the classic car market today and make driving it a real pleasure.

The example shown here, featuring electronic fuel injection, Maserati’s throaty-sounding 2.7-liter V6, and a 5-speed manualTransmission , was, remarkably, registered to the Citroën main dealership in Switzerland for its first ten years. It was subsequently owned by two members of the Swiss Citroën SM Club (one of whom was a board member) before the car passed into German hands in 2011 and was regularly driven by the two owners—who knew each other—on trips to their vacation home in southern France.

"As a general rule, a well-maintained SM runs without any problems. It just requires a little attention, some technical knowledge, and—if in doubt—a skilled mechanic who is familiar with the car’s specific features."

The selection of Citroën SMs these days isn't large, but it's certainly confusing. You'll find all sorts of examples there, ranging from obvious restoration projects to supposed concours contenders.

The Citroën SM offered here has always been expected to reliably take its driver to their destination, no matter what. That’s why all necessary work has been carried out by renowned specialists, ensuring that even today, the SM starts up readily at the first turn of the key, drives, steers, and brakes flawlessly, and raises and lowers its futuristic body on demand thanks to its fully functional hydropneumatic suspension.

As proof of its condition, the German Motor Vehicle Inspection Association ( TÜV ) recently issued the Citroën SM a clean inspection report.

The Interior , with its original leather, trim, and dashboard, has a charming patina, while the Exterior has been repainted in several places in the past.

If you're looking for a Citroën SM to drive and enjoy, this car is the perfect choice.
