The bangle design, the gear selector on the steering wheel, and especially that iDrive. For the senior BMW salesman of the 2000s, this BMW 7 Series came straight from hell. It remains unclear who failed whom at first—the salesperson with the car, or the car with the salesperson. The only thing that’s certain is that the BMW E65/66 was ahead of its time and really took off, at the latest, with the model refresh in 2005. A sleeker design and a revamped iDrive interface helped both salespeople and sales figures.

Today, the BMW 7 Series from the 2000s has achieved almost cult status. And anyone lucky enough to drive one of these cars in its natural habitat—long-distance travel—will understand why this era of automotive engineering is so popular right now.

I, Sebastian, have had the privilege of selling every engine variant—from the 730d to the 750i—during my six years as a BMW salesperson, but never one of the rare BMW 760i models with a 6-liter twelve-cylinder engine. My chances of achieving personal fulfillment have certainly never been better than with this particular car.
